Abstract:
Pictured are three traditional models of understanding salvation (atonement theories), the central act of Christ "per carnem": Christus Victor and the models of Anselm and Abelard. In the Christus Victor model, Christ is seen rescuing believers by defeating the devil. In Anselm's model, the emphasis is on Christ as the God-man who perfectly fulfills the obligation and debt humanity owes to God and so dignifies believers. In Abelard's model, the emphasis is on Christ's humility, which draws believers to faithful and loving reflection when they contemplate his sacrifice.
