David Curtis Steinmetz (1936-2015) was a scholar of Medieval and Reformation history and theology. His research and teaching focused on Luther, Calvin, and the history of biblical interpretation. He served the Duke Divinity community as Amos Ragan Kearns Distinguished Professor of the History of Christianity, in which capacity he taught introductory-level survey courses in church history as well as seminars for masters and doctoral students. He earned degrees from Wheaton College (B.A., 1958), Drew University (B.D., 1961), and Harvard University (Th.D., 1967), where he was supervised by Heiko Oberman. Professor Steinmetz taught at Lancaster Theological Seminary (1966-1971) before coming to Duke, where he spent most of his academic career.
A member of the United Methodist Church, David Steinmetz's home congregation was Livingston [United] Methodist Church, founded in 1843 by German Methodists in Columbus, OH. He received a Local Preacher's License on the recommendation of the Quarterly Conference of Livingston's charge in 1953, renewed annually until his ordination as a Deacon. David Steinmetz was ordained a Deacon in the Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1959, and became an Elder of the same conference in 1961.
