Description:
Dr. Keefe's English translation of Text 13 from the Latin which appears in her Explanationes Symboli Aevi Carolini (Turnhout: Brepols, 2012), 73–75. The translation includes notes and brief commentary. Dr. Keefe left both in draft form and may have intended to update or add certain portions prior to publication. The text has been checked and edited by Katie Benjamin, Divinity Archive Fellow. Text 12 is a questionnaire used by a bishop to assess a priest's understanding, though Dr. Keefe does not believe it was necessarily used actively. Dr. Keefe's commentary highlights four oddities in the text: (1) The initial question “Do you confess that the Son of God is capable of suffering according to his divinity or according to his humanity?” seems to be a test to see if the priest understands the word "passibilis." (2) The question on baptism elicits a response about "original sins," suggesting this text holds with the tradition that Adam committed six sins. (3) The question about the resurrection of the dead elicits some specifics (same status and gender), but does not necessarily comment on age or whether the appearance of a person will be changed, as other sources do. (4) The final question of God's invisibility is simply met with a response concerning God's one-ness and three-ness, which ignores the issue entailed by God's invisibility--whether the eyes of mortals, to whom God is invisible in life, experience change in the resurrection, such that in the next life one can see God.
