Description Dr. Keefe's English translation of Text 3 from the Latin which appears in her Explanationes Symboli Aevi Carolini (Turnhout: Brepols, 2012), 10–17. The translation includes notes and brief commentary. Dr. Keefe left both in draft form and may have intended to update or add certain portions prior to publication. The text has been checked and edited by Katie Benjamin, Divinity Archive Fellow. Text 3 is a collection of shorter texts commenting on the relation of the three persons of the Trinity to one another and focusing particularly on the role of the Holy Spirit. Many of the passages support the doctrine that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, known in the west by the presence of the word "filioque" in the Nicene Creed. The language is vivid, painting a picture, so to speak, of the doctrine, which leads Dr. Keefe to ask whether there is a relation between creed commentaries and art and architecture: namely, whether creed commentaries and architectural feats such as the three churches of Saint-Riquier modeled proper trinitarian theology in a time when images were not being produced. Dr. Keefe also wonders, given that Text 3 was meant for the education of Carolingian clergy, whether they were expected to teach the filioque doctrine to their people as well, such that the controversy between East and West had a truly grass-roots level. en_US
