Description |
Dr. Keefe's English translation of Text 2 from the Latin which appears in her Explanationes Symboli Aevi Carolini (Turnhout: Brepols, 2012), 6–8. The translation includes notes and brief commentary. Dr. Keefe left both in draft form and may have intended to update or add certain portions prior to publication. The text has been checked and edited by Katie Benjamin, Divinity Archive Fellow. Text 2 is a sermon, preserved in Latin but among other creed commentaries in Old High German, leading Dr. Keefe to suggest it may have been intended for oral translation for a congregation in Carolingian Germany. The commentary touches on the relationship between right living (the virtues) and right belief (the faith of the creed). Connecting these is love–the commentary presents the creed as a love story detailing the love among the persons of the Trinity and for creation, whose acts of love draw human beings into community with God and with one another, exhorting believers to avoid sins and do works of love. |
