Water and the Word is a study of Carolingian baptismal commentaries in their ninth-century manuscripts. A major part of the ninth-century Carolingian Reform was to educate the empire, beginning with the clergy, who were to educate their people in preparation for baptism, and to perform baptisms in order to morally transform society. Water and the Word has two volumes, the first presenting Dr. Keefe's research, arguments, and conclusions, and the second presenting new editions of 64 previously unpublished baptismal commentaries.
The book was the result of a monumental revision of Dr. Keefe's dissertation under Roger Reynolds for PIMS at the University of Toronto. She submitted it for publication with the University of Notre Dame Press in 1992, and the book was under contract in 1993 and counted toward Dr. Keefe's tenure review process in 1995; however, the book was not published until 2002.
