Description Dr. Keefe's English translation of Text 5 from the Latin which appears in her Explanationes Symboli Aevi Carolini (Turnhout: Brepols, 2012), 21–26. The translation includes notes and brief commentary. Dr. Keefe left both in draft form and may have intended to update or add certain portions prior to publication. The text has been checked and edited by Katie Benjamin, Divinity Archive Fellow. Text 5 is largely copied and otherwise excerpted from the De Ecclesiasticis Dogmatibus of Gennadius (d.496). Dr. Keefe's comments collate the text and explain what was excerpted and what was left out. Notable is an extended commentary (in the text as well as Dr. Keefe's notes) concerning the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead (Chapters VI–VIIII). Dr. Keefe notes that in the article on Christ coming to judge "the living and the dead," the meaning of "the living" and "the dead" takes different forms in various texts. Some authors interpret the phrase literally, meaning "those who are alive at the end of days and those who have already died." Others interpret it symbolically: "the living" are the saints, while "the dead" are sinners. Still others interpret the phrase metaphorically: "the living" are souls, while "the dead" are bodies. The composer of Text 5 actually differs from the source material of Gennadius, suggesting that "the living and the dead" are "the just and sinners." en_US
