Description |
Dr. Keefe set out for the Agora ruins in Kos Town with a hint from one of her guide books that there was a basilica somewhere in the site. Indeed she found it -- surprising herself by standing on top of the baptismal font itself -- and took extensive notes and made sketches, eventually identifying it by Volanakis' description as the Hafen Basilica (or Basilica Limenos). The baptistery itself was about five meters southwest of the basilica. (Volanakis in his description of Basilica Limenos notes the baptistery is this distance from the main basilica.) North of the baptistery was a line of six Corinthian capital pillars stretching toward the north, with a sign saying "Stoa Limenos" or "Harbor Stoa." These date from the 4th-3rd century BCE, and explain the name of the basilica (Kos Limenu) in Volanakis' notes. |
