Description:
Church of Hilegunis at Maktar (Mactaris) with baptistery with sunken rectangular baptismal font (s. V-VI). The church is some distance in and up from the road, after passing through wonderful Roman forum and through enormous Arch of Trajan. The first step down into the font is about 2 feet, the second step to the bottom is about 3 feet. The baptistery room is directly behind the apse of the church, with its own apse directly in line with the church's apse (see sketch in journal). The church had eight pairs of double columns in the nave.
