Description:
Mafoura, formerly Borj el Djerbi, about 5km east of Tebourba (36km northwest of Tunis). Henchir le Brille (proprietor: Ali Ferhadt); on the farm are extensive Roman ruins still uncovered. The ruins cover about two hectares and Dr. Keefe and Sassi were the first tourists the proprietor ever had. In the middle of a field (no road to it) was a square basin, about 1 meter x 1 meter, with two steps visible on one side (Dr. Keefe did not know if there were more steps or how deep the basin was originally) covered with white marble mosaics. The proprietor said it was two meters deep and the bottom had mosaics, but it was now covered with dirt for 5 feet. Perhaps it was a Roman bath. Here the proprietor of the farm (on the left) has just scraped away some dirt to show Dr. Keefe white marble mosaics around the basin. Sassi, Dr. Keefe's driver, is standing to the right.
