Abstract:
Decoration in the main dome of the Hagia Sophia. The forty ribs are decorated with alternating diamonds and crosses on a diagonal. There are windows at the base of the dome. According to pp 14 and 15 in Natalia Teteriantnikov's 1998 book "Mosaics of the Hagia Sophia: The Fossati Restoration and Work of the Byzantine Institute" it appears likely that the Islamic overlay covers a cross.
