Text 22 <On the Two Nativities of Christ>
Keefe, Susan
Textus 22 <De Duabus Christi Nativitatibus>
Dr. Keefe's English translation of Text 22 from the Latin which appears in her Explanationes Symboli Aevi Carolini (Turnhout: Brepols, 2012), 107. The translation includes notes and brief commentary. Dr. Keefe left both in draft form and may have intended to update or add certain portions prior to publication. The text has been checked and edited by Katie Benjamin, Divinity Archive Fellow. Text 22 explores the two "nativities" of Christ -- begotten of God the Father and born of the Virgin Mary. Dr. Keefe's commentary explores the contrast between the words unigenitus (in the Nicene Creed), unicus (in the Apostles' Creed), and primogenitus (in the biblical narrative).

Text 21 <A Work of Cerase (Syagrius?)>
Keefe, Susan
Textus 21 <Cerase Opus Est>
Dr. Keefe's English translation of Text 21 from the Latin which appears in her Explanationes Symboli Aevi Carolini (Turnhout: Brepols, 2012), 105. The translation includes notes and brief commentary. Dr. Keefe left both in draft form and may have intended to update or add certain portions prior to publication. The text has been checked and edited by Katie Benjamin, Divinity Archive Fellow. Text 21 is brief and seems to be an excerpt from a larger work by Syagrius known as the Regulae definitionum. The title uses an abbreviated form of Syagrius' name common to cryptographic writing styles. Dr. Keefe explains, "The vowels replaced with points leave only the consonants to be read: C(e)R(a)S(e) (o)P(u)S (e)ST. The name 'Cerase' probably derived from ‘Syagrius’ by the miswriting of a scribe (perhaps writing the text from oral dictation?)."

Text 19 <A Profession of Faith in the Trinity>
Keefe, Susan
Textus 19 <Professio Fidei in Trinitate>
Dr. Keefe's English translation of Text 19 from the Latin which appears in her Explanationes Symboli Aevi Carolini (Turnhout: Brepols, 2012), 100. The translation includes notes and brief commentary. Dr. Keefe left both in draft form and may have intended to update or add certain portions prior to publication. The text has been checked and edited by Katie Benjamin, Divinity Archive Fellow. From Dr. Keefe's commentary: "Simply put, we have here in Text 19 the explanation of the Trinity in its economic manifestation, as it revealed itself to the world, as opposed to explanations of the inner Trinity, or the relationship of the 3 persons among themselves, how the one God and one essence of divinity can somehow have distinction in its oneness, and how we try to explain this distinction with the words unbegotten, begotten, proceeding from two."

Text 18 <A Sermon at the Handing Over of the Creed to the Competents>
Keefe, Susan
Textus 18 <Sermo in Traditione Symboli ad Competentes>
Dr. Keefe's English translation of Text 18 from the Latin which appears in her Explanationes Symboli Aevi Carolini (Turnhout: Brepols, 2012), 97–98. The translation includes notes and brief commentary. Dr. Keefe left both in draft form and may have intended to update or add certain portions prior to publication. The text has been checked and edited by Katie Benjamin, Divinity Archive Fellow. The "competents" to whom the creed is being handed over are pagans coming from a world filled with superstitions and signs, which explains why the creed's rote memorization and recitation is prescribed. The competents are told to memorize the creed “so that you can have heavenly protection at all times,” in other words, allowing the creed to serve as a magical formula for protection.
